2009-2019 RIP My Laptop

General / 30 December 2019

So after 10 years my laptop that I do all of my illustration work on has died. It was a long time coming and was surprised it lasted this long. It's been that long as well since I had to buy a computer. Not sure which is the best for illustration and or 3D modelling. Aside from a desktop and laptop which would probably cost a lot to do both, any one has opinions on tablets like iPad or surface pro? Can those do 3D as well? Any input will suffice.

Recovering from 2018.

It's been a while since I updated my blog and in trying to be consistent in updating it this past year; I ran in to medical issues and other issues that derailed my efforts in maintaining constant blog entries. Hopefully this year all of that can be behind me and I can continue to provided blog entries of my works in progress and ideas including sketches and concepts. Thanks for following along for those that do.

Bug Head Concept Update 1/14.

General / 14 January 2018

I went ahead and did a redesign of the head as well. Initially, the character had it's mouth covered in the original piece and I wanted to have a complete look with out the armor. I used references from a grub worm for the back of the head and for the profile I lightly used reference from a vulture minus the beak. I"ll continue to work on it along with the color pattern and texture for it. Once that is done I'll work on the overall body. I don't usually work on a character with the head first and then the body but the head was what I initially worked on when I added it to my portfolio. I figured I can redesign the head first and figure out the body design to match the head.

Bug Head Concept

General / 09 January 2018

I had an idea of going back to some of my portrait illustrations to see if I can flesh out a full character from one of them. I chose the illustration titled "Bug Head" since I always liked the way I designed it.

I sketched out a few concepts for the body since I had previously only drawn the head from the upper chest upward. I only drew 6 quick sketches since I found a comfortable direction I wanted to take the idea of what I wanted the whole body to look like. I can use different details from these sketches to come up with what the whole character will look like.

I will post next the initial sketch for the design along with some references I will be using. Most likely I might be using ideas from insects and some machinery to make up his armor and body. He seems to have both a mechanical and organic feel to it. That will be posted on my next blog entry.

Cheers,

- Carlos

Hello!

General / 01 January 2018

HI! Thanks for visiting my blog. My name is Carlos and I'm an illustrator living in Atlanta. I wanted to have a way to keep everyone up to date on the artwork I've been working on. A lot of the art work I have done I haven't been able to upload to my portfolio for non disclosure reasons and its' been a while since it's been updated.  Since there is now an option to have a blog on Artstation, it would be easier to show the process of my personal projects here on this blog from initial thumb nails and sketches to finish concept and illustrations. Feel free to comment and hope you enjoy what you see.

Thanks,

Carlos.
